The Transformation

Wow. That is all I can say about these past 24 weeks. My life has been forever changed in more ways than words can ever describe. BUT here goes…
I walked into Dusty’s office with the intention that I wanted to lose weight, get healthy, and possibly compete. I left Dusty’s office an hour later knowing that I was 160lbs, 28% body fat, and stepping on stage in a tiny ass bikini on October 10th and 17th, 2015. Yeah, that’s real life.
My prep began in May and I was so excited. I thought I had everything in life a girl could want. I finished my undergrad in psychology, I got a job teaching yoga, I enjoyed my job at the hospital, I had a boyfriend, a roof over my head, and a good support system.
This prep though, it makes you emotional. It challenges you in ways you didn’t know you could or would ever be challenged. You are forced to learn about yourself and the other people in your life. I cried almost daily, and 90% of those tears were shed in the gym. The gym became my safe place when my world turned upside down.
Fast forward three months to August. My prep was not difficult, I actually had it easy compared to some and had very few low days. The low days though, are what get you. The bad days attack and eat you alive. August was THE WORST. In August, my boyfriend and I broke up, and very shortly after that my grandfather passed away. I had been married, divorced, and lost my father to cancer by the time I was 26 and none of that compares to this. I used to run to food and alcohol to suppress my feelings. I used food and alcohol as a way to bond and build relationships. This time, I couldn’t do that.
I showed up to multiple sessions with Dusty crying. The session after my grandfather passed will be an hour of my life that I never forget. I had lost 4 pounds in a little over a week, and was a mess. I walked through the door and Dusty took one look at me and said get in my truck we aren’t training today. We spent that hour talking about everything. Past, present, and future. Holding in the negativity wasn’t going to get anywhere. Letting it go and moving on is what needed to happen and so it did.
I was not perfect on my prep. I binge ate almond butter, I had mixed nuts when I shouldn’t have. But we’re human. Prep is hard. I learned so much about myself as a person. I have been able to forgive people in my life and let go of past hurt in order to move forward in a positive relationship. I have found a confidence and a love for myself that I didn’t know was possible. I have found who my true support system is in my family and friends. The best part is that I gained an entirely new family in the Renovation Training team, through thick and thin they have become home to me.

I stepped on stage on October 10th and 17th knowing that I did the best I could and that no matter what the outcome I have a life to be so proud of. This journey is my trophy, and it’s the best trophy a girl could ask for.

  1. Hi Ryanne. Thanks so much for visiting my blog during the hop and for the kind words. I love your blog name, too.
What an incredible transformation you've had. Obviously physical, but I can imagine it was a tremendous emotional/mental transformation, too. It's great that you were able to find release in the gym and during your sessions that you may not have found otherwise. So sorry about losing your grandfather along the way.

  2. You look incredible, seriously, a fab transformation. Left, you look sad, Right, you looking rocking!
August sounds like a not so fun month for you, but the fact that Dusty got you to talk instead of train, tells me that he knows exactly what he is doing, and is a keeping.

  3. Wow. I cannot imagine going through all of that while training for a bikini competition. You are a strong, strong woman. It sounds like you have an incredible coach who truly cares about you as a person as well as your training. And, I think you look FABULOUS in your above bikini photo! On another note, I lived in Minneapolis for 5 years right after college. I loved it but not the winters ;) I'm excited to follow you and get a glimpse of my old city. http://www.olivesnwine.com

    1. Ah yes, the winters here are so unpredictable. This year we are set for a mild winter, so fingers crossed it ends up that way! I moved away for a while, to Atlanta, but came back to MN - thankfully summer and fall make it worth living here!

  5. I love your last sentence "My journey is my trophy" It's so hard to accept when things don't go as you planned in envisioned, but the lessons and memories from the journey will last a lifetime.

    Congrats.

Will you be competing again next season? (i don't know much about the seasons of competition)

  14. Hi Ryanne! Stopping by from the blog hop and first wanted to say thank you for the sweet comments on my spotlight post last week. What an AMAZING transformation you have had! In your before and after photos, you look radiant and so happy on the right after your competition. Congratulations! And to think that you did all of that with so many personal life struggles. That's a true testament to your inner strength and willpower. That was something you wanted, you promised yourself you'd accomplish, and you did. I also love that your trainer took you aside and used that hour as more of a therapy session rather than training. I'm sure that helped tremendously. Congrats again, you should be proud! It's been great connecting with you through the hop - I hope to stay in touch!

  16. What an incredible transformation! Wow. That bikini is super tiny on the bottom and you look fantastic in it! It sounds as it you had a wonderfully compassionate trainer that took the time to really get to know you and work on the mental aspect of transformation too. I have to confess I eat Maple Almond Butter every day. I love it that stuff. It was so nice to meet you through the hop!

    1. Oh - the bikini is so tiny! So so so tiny! Thank you for the compliment. I love almond butter - it's a problem, but I'm getting better at using it as a treat instead of a daily binge.

  17. You look amazing, and I love the story behind it. So many people thing that those who look amazing, have it easy. But life is never easy, you showed that with all you had to fight through to get to where you did. Life is hard work, and what a feeling of great accomplishment knowing you pushed past hard times and hard obstacles to achieve the goal you did!
Thanks so much for sharing your story!!!!

    1. There is nothing easy about losing weight and gaining muscle! That I know firsthand. I am not naturally theme or "genetically gifted" as they call it in the bodybuilding world. Hard work makes it such much more worth it,and knowing I created it through sweat and tears!

  20. Hi Ryanne! You have been through quite a transformation this past year, both inside and out. It's so hard to follow thru on our dreams when life gets in the way and you clearly showed how tough you were to make it happen. It's awesome to have a friend in our corner on our worst days, too. I'm inspired by your honesty and authenticity. (Ya, almond butter is a weakness here, too!). :)

    1. Thank you, I try to share my story with the most transparency possible. I want people to know that life isn't rainbows all the time, and that following your dreams sometimes comes with a lot of bumps in the road. It's not we respond to those bumps that determines how we grow and who we become.
